PERFORMANCE APPRAISALS

 

1.     Introducing Performance Appraisals

A performance appraisal is the regular review and evaluation of an employee relating exact time period for making decision on his contribution, dedication, skills, achievements, growth or weaknesses for the organization.

      Management have a responsibility to evaluate employee through performance appraisals annually, semi-annually or quarterly.

 

2.     Definitions of Performance Appraisals by authors

“Performance appraisal is a systematic, periodic and so far humanly possible, an impartial rating of an employee’s excellence in matters pertaining to his present of and his potentialities for a better job” (Flippo.B.Edwin, n.d.).

 

“Performance appraisal involves the identification, measurement & management of human performance in organization” (Mejia.G, n.d.).

 

“Performance appraisal s a formal and systematic process by means of which the relevant strength and weaknesses of the employees are identified, measured, recorded and developed” (swanepoel, n.d.).

 

“Performance appraisal is often perceived simply as a technique of personnel administration, but where it is used for administrative purposes, it becomes a part of managerial strategy, the implicit logic of which is that in order to get people to direct their efforts towards organizational objectives, management must tell them what to do, judge how well theu have done and reward or punish them accordingly” (Macgregor, n.d.).

 

3.     Benefit of the performance appraisal to the organization

Organization that use the employee performance appraisals to identify areas of strengths and opportunity can benefit as well. Performance appraisal can provide and indication of areas of training need as well as direction for the leadership development, performance improvement and successful planning.

 

 

4.     Benefit of the performance appraisal to the employee

We can identify that the performance appraisal is a tool of motivation through evaluating performance of the employee. If they have achieved their targets according to organization aspect, the employee’s efficiency and loyalty can be determined. This motivation will become toward to better position, designation, increased salary scale, personal development and also it helps to the employee for enhance his performance in the future.

5.     Objectives of the performance appraisal

 v  To maintain records for compensation packages, wage structure, salaries, pay increments or restructuring.

v  To identify the strengths and weaknesses of employees

v  To assess and maintain the potential each person has for further growth and development.

v  To provide feedback to employees regarding their performance.

v  To serve as a basis for improving working habits of employees.

v  To review and retain promotional and other training programs.

7.     Conclusion

Performance appraisal is an important aspect of Human resource management. It is human resource who makes possible to achieve organizational goals. Performance appraisal should make in efficient and independent.  So that, in one side organization can benefited and other side the personals can develop their career better.
